On the road to 2037 – Part 1 This week we continue our series on AI.

Did you get a chance to listen to the podcast link I sent you last week. If not please do…here it is again.

AI: The Basics.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a field of computer science that focuses on creating intelligent machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. AI systems use algorithms and data to learn from and make predictions or decisions, allowing them to recognize patterns, solve problems, and adapt to new situations. The fundamental components of AI include machine learning, which involves training models to learn from data, natural language processing, which enables machines to understand and interact with human language, and computer vision, which enables machines to interpret and understand visual information.

AI: Types

There are three basic forms of AI: Narrow AI, General AI, and Superintelligent AI.

Narrow AI refers to AI systems that are designed to perform specific tasks or functions, such as image recognition or language translation, but lack the ability to generalize beyond those tasks. These complete analytical cognitive tasks. We’ve had Narrow AI since the 1970s. If you are interested go and look at a computer called PARRY. (ICCC 1972)

General AI, also known as Strong AI, is an AI system that possesses human-level intelligence and is capable of understanding, learning, and performing any intellectual task that a human being can do. It has the ability to reason, solve problems, and adapt to different situations. IS human inspired, can understand emotion.

Superintelligent AI refers to an AI system that surpasses human intelligence in virtually all cognitive abilities. It is hypothetical and represents an AI that could outperform humans in every intellectual task and potentially possess greater capabilities for innovation and problem-solving. The development of superintelligent AI raises significant ethical and existential questions.

AI: The Impact

The short-term impact of AI involves immediate changes in various industries and sectors, such as increased automation, improved efficiency, and enhanced data analysis capabilities. AI technologies are being deployed in areas like customer service, manufacturing, healthcare, and finance, streamlining processes and augmenting human capabilities.

In the medium term, AI is expected to further transform industries by enabling more advanced applications, such as personalized medicine, autonomous vehicles, and smart cities. The integration of AI into daily life and work is likely to continue, resulting in increased productivity, improved decision-making, and the development of new products and services.

Looking at the long term, the impact of AI becomes more uncertain and potentially transformative. With the progression towards General AI or Superintelligent AI, there are both opportunities and challenges. Advancements in AI could revolutionize industries, create new job opportunities, and tackle complex global problems. However, there are concerns about ethical implications, job displacement, and the potential risks associated with highly autonomous AI systems. It is crucial to carefully navigate the development and deployment of AI to maximize its benefits and address potential challenges.

“Whatever form AI takes, its journey will be fraught with ethical idiosyncrasies and met, often simultaneously, with fear and celebration. Some will worry about job redundancies, privacy and control, while others will herald the next step in human greatness. Regardless of your stance, AI will undoubtedly change us and our world in many ways; so it's paramount to be prepared for the world ahead.” UBS*
